To NaNo or Not To NaNo?

November is National Novel Writing Month

November is National Novel Writing Month

This is me thinking out loud.

To NaNo...

  • Fast drafting works. I've written two novels that way.
  • I have an idea.
  • It's nice to fast draft when everyone else is doing it. Even if you don't get involved in the online communities or postings, it's still an extra kick in the pants.

Not To NaNo...

  • I haven't prepared. Usually I go in with a head start of 10,000ish words - a rough outline and a few scenes. Right now, I have a rough idea (no outline) and about half a scene (2,400 words). And a title, which I never have, so there's that...
  • I've just finished revisions to last year's NaNo novel. Like, just. Yesterday. My head's still with those characters and is going to need to stay there to execute my readers' changes. Maybe not the best time to jump into something new.

NaNoWriMo starts in about a week. I'm not sure where I'm going to land, but if you've considering writing a book, it is well worth participating (you draft a novel in 30 days - and yes, it's totally possible). There's more info here and Denise Jaden's book Fast Fiction is a great guide, practical how-to guide.
